Schafer Corporation has an immediate requirement for an Electro-Optical Engineer with broad experience in all aspects of the theory and practice of optical systems engineering in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Develop approaches to a variety of optical system engineering tasks dynamically assigned by an innovative customer with a demanding program schedule.
Optical system modeling using software such as ZEMAX or FRED to assess stray light effects and performance metrics such as Strehl, wavefront error, and image quality; and to assess manufacturability and operability - i.e. ease of focus or alignment.
Design optical systems using ZEMAX or similar software - particularly laboratory optical bench layouts, test equipment, or prototypes of small systems.
Safely operate up to kilowatt-class CW lasers and Joule-class pulsed laser systems and optical beam trains.
Develop laser safety procedures.
Understand thermal management of laser systems and optical beam trains, and atmospheric propagation.
Analysis and testing of laser-induced damage.
Performance testing of integrated optical systems including laboratory testing of optical components (e.g. BRDF, laser-induced damage, detector characterization), and outdoor testing of optical systems including but not limited to tests involving atmospheric laser propagation
Design and build test equipment.
Optical problem analysis (e.g. Gaussian beam propagation, radiometry, thermal modeling) using Matlab, Mathcad, or similar program
Coordinate and perform studies of EO system performance that could involve factory integrated optical test planning, stray light performance predictions, and development of novel optical testing approaches.
Coordinate and perform studies of protection in an operational environment, operational calibration and operational environmental optical effects.
Schedule activities and/or meetings.
Prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Clearly communicate technical information in written reports and briefings.
Lead members of technical team.
Work closely with program management to meet program milestones and deadlines.

Degree: Masters in Physics or Engineering.
Years of experience: 10+ years in optical system engineering.
Proficient in ZEMAX.
Proficient in MATLAB, MathCAD, or similar analytical software.
Proficiency in FRED is a bonus.
Understanding of the physics of optical materials and coatings.
Knowledge of optical detectors for use in test instrumentation as well as an understanding of the physics of detector materials and structures for laser damage testing and analysis.
Understanding of optical coating specifications and properties.
Practical as well as analytical work experience is more important than academic credentials.
Self-motivated, able to lead other members of a technical team, and work with little or no management supervision.
